Formerly a political prison and a leper colony before that, the historic landmark of Robben Island was recently established as a museum, national monument and world heritage site. Experience the conditions of incarceration - view Nelson Mandela's maximum security prison cell (Cell 5) and see the lime quarries. In the one, hard labour was served, in the other prisoners discussed strategy, freedom and the future. Later, many would develop eye problems as a result of the sun's reflection off the lime surfaces. This well-preserved landmark is a monument to the triumph of freedom, dignity and determination over humiliation and oppression. During the tour, you will have the opportunity to explore the Murray's Bay Harbour precinct attractions, such as the Muslim shrine, or kramat, and the Museum Shop.

Join a fun filled evening of interactive entertainment and delectable food at Gold restaurant. Sample a set Cape Malay / African style menu which is served at the table in sharing and individual portions. The evening starts off with an interactive djembe drumming session followed by a traditional soothing hand washing ceremony.  A professional djembe drum instructor will teach you how to play the basic rhythms of the djembe drum.  Live entertainment during dinner includes a Mali puppet show which involves story telling with singers, dancers, puppets and musicians. The final performance is by the waiters and kitchen staff who will entertain you with some local song and dances.

South Africa's largest city remains its financial and commercial heart. It is in this fast-paced metropolis that the country's radical political and social transformation is most evident, this is the Rainbow Nation at work. It is a heady experience, with contrasts of every kind around every single corner.

The tour sets off for Constitution Hill, home of South Africa's architectural marvel, the Constitutional Court, and the site of Johannesburg's Old Fort Prison (closed on Sundays).
Guests explore the inner city of Johannesburg and the influence the discovery of gold brought to this city and indeed South Africa.

Guests visit and explore the Maboneng Precinct, a wonderful example of urban regeneration of the eastside of the Johannesburg CBD which is now home to several independent retail, restaurant, art, and entertainment venues, fresh and unique lifestyle offerings of this new exciting development.

Everyone knows the name. It is a legend. SOWETO, the acronym for South Western Township, is home to over 2 million people, who, despite living in crowded and chaotic conditions, have a tangible sense of community, one which ironically, the ordered, walled, elitist northern suburbs lack.

Inside Soweto, guests visit the Kliptown Open Air Museum where delegates met in 1955 to adopt the Freedom Charter, now the cornerstone of the Bill of Rights and the South African Constitution.

The journey continues to Regina Mundi Church, the site of many secret underground meetings of the then-banned political parties.
The next stop is the Hector Pieterson Museum, and discover the cause of the tragic riots that led to his death; guests pass Mandela House and are given time to visit this fascinating little museum (own account).

Finally, guests are taken past the largest stadium in Africa, Soccer City, host of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Final, this magnificent stadium is now nicknamed The Calabash for its resemblance to the African Pot. Soweto is unlike a suburb anyone has ever seen or been to, yet the history of struggle encapsulated here is a cornerstone of the South African story.

Depart Accra at 7:00AM and drive to Cape Coast.
Enroute, Stop at the former slave in Assin Manso.
Visit the site of “Donkor Nsuo”, the former Slave
River and market, as well as the final transit point
for a large number of enslaved Africans. This is the
final resting place for two ancestors whose mortal
remains were returned from the USA and Jamaica
and re-interred there.
Continue to Cape Coast and embark on a guided tour of one
of the infamous Forts, Castles and Slave Dungeons of Ghana.
History will unfold the story of the slave trade of which the
impact is still felt beyond the shores of Africa today. Visit
the Cape Coast Castle built by the Swedes in 1653 and was
later taken over by the British. This castle also houses the
West African Historical Museum established by the
Smithsonian Institute in collaboration with the Ghanaian
Government in 1994. Depart Cape Coast and arrive in Accra
by 7:00PM.

After breakfast, depart your hotel and drive to the
historic town of Elmina, a place of deep significance in the
African diaspora’s history. Overlooking the Atlantic
Ocean, Elmina is home to the imposing Elmina Castle, one
of the oldest European-built structures in sub-Saharan
Africa and a former holding site for enslaved Africans
before their forced departure. It is here, in this solemn yet
powerful location, that the Fihankra Ceremony takes
place—a sacred ritual celebrating the return of people of
African descent to their ancestral homeland. This
ceremony is observed by individuals from the African diaspora, including African Americans,
Caribbeans, Afro-Brazilians, and others whose ancestors were forcibly taken from the
continent. Guided by Ghanaian elders, traditional leaders, and cultural custodians, the event
begins with the rhythmic sounds of fontomfrom drums echoing through the air,
accompanied by soulful chanting. Elders lead prayers and invocations, calling upon the
spirits of the ancestors to bless the occasion and welcome their long-lost kin back home. One
of the most poignant moments of the ceremony takes place at the shores of Elmina, where
participants engage in a ritual cleansing. Water is poured over their hands and feet,
symbolizing purification and renewal, washing away the pain of the past and marking a new
beginning. This act mirrors the historical passage their ancestors endured, but this time, it is
performed as a return—a reclaiming of identity and belonging. Following the cleansing,
participants receive a traditional Ghanaian name, carefully chosen by elders to reflect their
spirit, heritage, and journey. As their names are announced, they are draped in colorful kente
cloth, signifying their acceptance into the African family. The ceremony reaches its emotional
peak as participants step forward, one by one, to walk through the infamous “Door of No
Return” inside Elmina Castle—this time, in the opposite direction, symbolizing a powerful
reversal of history.
